Q&A: Trouble making the videos from my Flip Camera show up on Windows Movie maker as vid instead of audio!?
Question by Frances: Trouble making the videos from my Flip Camera show up on Windows Movie maker as vid instead of audio!?
I have Windows Movie Maker on my Windows Vista laptop. I want to upload videos from my Flip Video Camera onto Windows Movie Maker, but every time I drag it onto the little area, it goes to audio and won’t play the picture part. Please help, and use easy, simple terms, since I’m not really tech savvy. 🙂 Thanks a lot!

That’s because the audio from your flip camera video is correctly formatted for use in Windows Movie Maker, but the video isn’t.
The flip camera video has to be in one of the following video formats:
.asf, .avi, dvr-ms, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, .wmv
To see what format your Flip camera video is – right-click on the file and choose Properties from the drop-down menu. What extension does it have? Is it one of those listed above? If not, you are going to have to convert the file before you can see it in Windows Movie Maker.
Free video converters are available online, but I am including a link to a converter I use in this post. Download the Koyote Soft Free Video Converter v2.3 from here:
http://www.koyotesoft.com/indexEn.html
Install the converter (click Run).
Open up the Koyote Soft video converter and:
> Click on Add files (top left corner of menu)
> Use the browse feature to locate the Flip camera file
> The file should appear in the conversion window (with a check mark beside it)
> On the bottom, choose an “Output Format” (compatible with Windows Movie Maker)
> On the “Output Path” choose where to save the converted file (desktop is best)
> Now click on Convert Video (top left corner of menu)
You will see your video being converted in the right-hand viewing pane. Once it has been successfully converted to a format compatible with Windows Movie Maker, import it back into the program again. Click Play in the WMM viewing pane to see your newly converted video.
Note: Since camera video is customarily in .MOV format, conversion will be required for all video from your Flip camera if you intend to use it in Windows Movie Maker.
