Q&A: What are the copyright laws on taking things in video games and movies and putting them on clothing?

Question by Chaz: What are the copyright laws on taking things in video games and movies and putting them on clothing?
You see, I’m helping a small business for making video game and movie related clothing start up, and I’m having trouble finding information on the laws for using things seen in movies and games on clothing and if it is illegal how to get permission. The last thing we want is to put “ITS A TRAP!” (star wars) or Master Chiefs helmet (halo) on a shirt and end up getting sued.

So what are the laws and how can we get around them or work with them if there are some?

Thanks!

You must contact the company of the video game/movie, and get a copyright quote… so you can use their logo. The good thing about this, is their thought about it. They are getting semi-free commercialism.

If you do make it, then you probably have to give the company a “cut” of the shirt’s income… I’m not sure about that part.

If they do not know you are doing this, they would sue you.
