The Producer convinces a financier to put up the money for the film, and is responsible for the movie making a return on the money invested in it. They hire the director and actors, and if things aren’t to their liking, they are free to make the changes they want.

If the Director works like a professional sports coach, coaching the entire performance of his team towards a victory, then the Producer is like an team owner, who watches out for the team, the stadium, the vending companies, etc., making sure that, in addition to the team having a winning season, they also have a profitable one, too.

If you’ve ever seen the HBO original show “Entourage”, in this current season, Eric became a Producer for the film ‘Medellin’. This meant he was responsible for the film being done on time, on focus, on budget, and avoiding possible legal troubles. The director, Billy Walsh, seem determined to frustrate all 4 of these things, by running long, needing a script rewrite, (which requires an additional fee that wound up being given away), and sexually harrassing an actress.
