Q&A: What HS courses should I take to help prepare me for majoring in Graphic Design?
Question by MassRomantic: What HS courses should I take to help prepare me for majoring in Graphic Design?
I’m in the middle of my junior year and I just figured out that I want to major in Graphic Design. I want to work with print ads or make movie posters and stuff.
For my senior year, I plan to take Art II (a year long class), Graphic Design and Animation (a year long computer class), and I have one more slot. Should I take Yearbook, which would help in like organization and presentation, or should I take Psychology, which would help determine how to appeal to a certain audience? Or do you suggest taking something else?
I’m also dropping a science class because I don’t think it’s needed?
I’m planning to apply to an art school, so I know I need to make an art portfolio. But I’m not sure how that really works either..
I’m a bit lost right now. Any guidance or advice at all would be greatly appreciated!

The best way to determine the right courses you should take, is to talk to the collage you plan on attending. Either ask someone there what classes they would recommend, or ask what courses are listed on their syllabus and take similar High School courses. I suppose you need to consider math courses as well. Even in designing, you need to know your math to help in proportions and such.
