Question by Star: Would you quit your job if you felt it was unethical? What would you do in my situation?
I am working as a telemarketer and I feel like I pressure people into buying something they don’t want and can’t even afford. A lot of people don’t even seem to know what they are even buying, especially elderly people and foreigners who have trouble understanding English but I have to sell the products to them anyway. (We have to give a certain number of rebuttals and read the scripted responses). I once got a call from an old woman and I was supposed to sell her a traveling membership service. She told me she was old, sick and crippled and couldn’t travel. I asked a supervisor to end the call and they said sell it to her anyway 0_0 I got another call from someone who said their husband was in the hospital. I ended the call and my coworker said not to that she didn’t give a damn, that she would sell it to them anyway and didn’t care about the people on the phone. Are people really that heartless, seriously!? I’ve only been here for just over a month but am thinking about quitting. I have another job but it’s only 20 hours a week, so that’s why I got this one as well. But it doesn’t seem worth it to me. I know jobs are hard to come by and I am only 19 with no work experience so It would probably be hard to find another job. I am trying to save up money quickly so I can get a car and move out of my parents house. It is a necessity that I leave as soon as possible. I left college so I would have time to work the two jobs so I can leave as soon as possible. I would be stuck here a lot longer if I didn’t have that second job to save up money… but it just seems morally wrong to me and doing it makes me feel horrible about myself. As soon as I have enough money, I am moving out of state. I would only have the job for a few months, maybe until December. My friend says to just keep it for a few more months so I can leave… but I don’t know.. what would you do in my situation?

I would quit my job if I had to do something unethical. I would give my notice tomorrow. There is so much other stuff to do, and still be able to look at yourself in the mirror. I wouldn’t want to even handle the money that comes from the paycheck from that job.
It sounds like your company is stealing. Even if it is technically legal, they are still taking something from somebody, such as money, for a service they can not use.
If you are religious, thou shall not steal is something that we will be held accountable for.
If you aren’t religious, you still might have a feeling in your bones that it isn’t right.
Go with that feeling.
