Question about movie screenplay rights…?

Question by Ms. Lovett♥: Question about movie screenplay rights…?
After a writer sells a screenplay to be made into a movie, if a sequel or remake is ever made, is it through the permission of the original script writer or the company who made it into a movie?

Basically, can they make sequels/remakes without the permission of whoever wrote the first movie?

The screenwriter writes the screenplay, sells it, and that’s the end of his involvement. He sells his rights when he sells the script.

Now … if the story is based on a novel, then the novelist is the one who holds the rights to the characters, etc. If any sequels are made that involve the character, then the novelist is the one who the production company has to approach to get the rights.
