Far too often when sales professionals are on the phone they try to sell the prospect. They share countless features, benefits, and let the prospect know that they would be crazy to pass up on this opportunity. At the end of the conversation the salespeople that use this approach are usually greeted with “let me think about it” or “I’ll get back to you” which means you aren’t getting the sale.
Sales scripts that sell just don’t work. You can’t sell someone something they don’t really want or need. Trying to persuade or convince someone to make an investment in your offering when there isn’t a match will just end up with you getting a return.
Instead of selling customers on what you have to offer, consider the following three methods to getting customers to invest in what you have or get off the phone.
Find a match
– Let prospect know at the beginning of the phone conversation they you aren’t selling them anything. Let them know that you are merely trying to find out if there is a match to what you are offering and what their goals are. By providing prospects with this option you lower their guard and put yourself in the position of power.
Immediate Interest Piquing Question – Reveal to your prospect early in your conversation an item of value that will keep their attention. People are often distracted on the phone, you will want to grab it by asking them a powerful interest piquing question. You could ask them something along the lines of “would you like to discover how you could save 29% on your monthly telecom services right now?”.
Stop Answering Questions – Man sales scripts start by trying to build rapport and then reveal key
features, what a waste! Instead of answering a prospects questions, I invite you to become the interviewer. The interviewer gets to decide who gets accepted and who gets rejected. The more questions you ask the quicker you will find who is the best for your offering and who you should hang up on.
