Spiderman 3 cost $200 Million to make. Profits?
Question by Kara: Spiderman 3 cost 0 Million to make. Profits?
I am sure Spiderman 3 will make $ 200 Million at US Box Office alone. However, when does a movie really make a profit. Is it when it actually goes over the cost to make it mark which means Box Office alone or can it be less, even a lot less, and make a “profit” or everyone involved money anyway. (I do know they make their money on DVDs) I guess I am thinking that everyone gets paid ahead of time including Producers and if a movie flops even in DVDs that the studio takes the hit.
And, does a movie have to make a “profit” or sometimes they never really do and it is all in how the numbers are juggled or it just is a nice write off.

Spiderman 3 is actually costing less to advertise this time around since people are so aware of it from the comic books and the previous two movies.
Basically, once you cover the cost to make the movie (including actors’ salaries) and promotion, you’re getting into profits.
Sometimes, a movie will go into profit as soon as they start selling the distribution rights. One example of this is the movie Equilibrium with Christian Bale. This movie had a lot of buzz and then seemed to completely disappear. It turns out that the studio didn’t want to risk losing money on promotion, and once they sold the distribution rights, the movie made a profit.
So they quietly released it to about 300 screens domestically and then prepared it for overseas and the eventual DVD.
That’s a shame, because it was a pretty good sci-fi movie with some great actors in it…Christian Bale, Sean Bean, Sean Pertwee, William Fichtner, Angus MacFayden, and Emily Watson.
