‘Take The A Train’ – solo jazz piano tutorial
This is a solo jazz piano tutorial – it is one of the tunes most likely to be called at a jam session though I have played it slower than usual – almost as a ballad. Instead of the simple harmony that is usually used (making it ideal as an up-tempo song to improvise over), I have done some minor reharmonisation to make it more suitable to play as a ballad. I have, nevertheless, retained some of the ‘signature’ things that just about everyone plays – the usual piano intro, the 4 bar figure used as a substitute for the first 4 bars when launching the next soloist’s improvisation, and the final ending. The video and midi file can be downloaded free from my website : www.bushgrafts.com and the printable transcription is on my DVD (details on my website)
