The Book Of Eli Movie Review

The Book of Eli, starring both Mila Kunis and Denzel Washington, and directed by Albert and Allen Hughes is rated R for language and brutal violence. The movie is based on the fact that a war has ravaged the world and a few select individuals are able to remember how times were before it happened. Then there is a man with a purpose who seeks to carry out his mission and you can join him in his journey while you watch movies online.

The setting is something similar to that of what you’d expect after the apocalypse. It is a futuristic film taking place 30 years from now. A nuclear war has come and gone and this is the remaining world. Government is no longer functioning in the same way and everyone is left to a small community for direction.

Denzel stars as Eli, a man with a King James Bible in his backpack, and a mission to head west with his

revelation in his book. Non confrontational is his type but a challenge will cause a fight. He is a Christian but make no mistake about it, he has his purpose. His opposite, Carnegie, a villainous dictator played by Gary Oldman seeks to have this book for his own purposes. He wants to rule the world and believes that this bible is the only way to do it. He states that “it’s not a book, it’s a weapon”.  It is the last surviving one on the planet.  Solana, played by Mila Kunis, is Carnegie’s step daughter who fights his dominating existence and tries to see a way out and Eli appears to be the answer.

Eli is a very cold hearted character and his compassion is quite selective along with having a very vicious streak in him. He is frequently pictured keeping to himself by listening to music by way of earphones so his character is hard to perceive as any other way. An

elderly couple is slain when he puts them in harm’s way and while he tries to protect Solana, he does nothing to help her mother Claudia played by Jennifer Beals, who has been through countless amounts of abuse.

The acting is just as lacking as the story line is. Washington approaches every scene with too much violence or  with a strange mythical approach while Oldman does nothing out of the ordinary to make him memorable in the role. Mila Kunis on the other hand actually brings some determination and spark to her role. The story undercuts her abilities which would be much better used elsewhere. The plot has a twist that is downright bizarre and so random that it may leave viewers placing their heads in their hands in complete and utter disappointment followed by many groans.

The Book of Eli is spread across to many genres to really be labeled as one. There is

not enough action to be called that and the violence is too prominent to call it an inspirational film as well. The story line and performances leave something to be desired from all angles. This is one that may have been considered a wasted movie ticket so if you watch movies on line wait until you can see it on the computer screen and save yourself some money.
