Sports movies are a common feature in Hollywood. The drama of real life sport is entertaining, heartbreaking and exhilarating and so it’s easy to see why film makers are happy to draw on the sporting world for inspiration. One of the sports that has a surprising number of films based on it is the game of Golf, quite often taking a light hearted approach to the typically serious game. 4. The Legend of Bagger Vance
The Legend of Bagger Vance is a more recent adaptation of a Golf story which originated in book form. The movie doesn’t dwell on the book’s mythology and spiritual focus but focuses more on the sport of Golf, the main character (played by Matt Damon) and his return from seeing atrocities during the First World War to become a better golfer and man in general. This is all done with the help of his mysterious and friendly ‘guide’, Bagger Vance (played by Will Smith).

Tin Cup is the nickname of driving range pro Roy McAvoy who after giving golf lessons to a Clinical Psychologist begins receiving counselling from her to help him develop the confidence and drive to become a Golf professional again. Caddyshack is Harold Ramis’ first film (And would later go on to create Ghostbusters) and stars many American comedy actors such as Chevy Chase, Bill Murray and Rodney Dangerfield. The story is of a golf caddy, Danny, who wanted to go to College but his family was unable to afford it and his grades were not good enough for a scholarship. Then his golf club’s boss informs him of a scholarship scheme they are running and Danny does everything he can to make sure he wins it.
