Tips on making new friends?

So, i am trying to make new friends, but I just am not very good at it. Like for example, at my work I talk to people and even sometimes go to lunch with em, but how do I hang out with them on our free time? I guess it just seems like I have acquaintances right now and would really like to get friends. Like people who call you up and say hey, lets see a movie or something. I only have about 2 or 3 friends right now. Also, in about a week I go back to college, any ideas on making friends and meeting people there? It just seems really hard when everyone is just sitting in class listening to the teacher.

find something good to talk about that will make everyone join your conversation or if they need help with something help them and then start a conversation
