It takes some careful examination to determine the two best films of 2007 because, after all, 2007 was a great year for movies. Really it comes down to a matter of opinion and genre preference. 2007 offered some great comedies such as “Superbad” and “Knocked Up”, but also offered some terrific dramas such as “American Gangster” and “Babel”; however in 2007, the two best movies of the year came from unexpected sources: foreign cinema and independent features.
“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” was a French foreign film but it was still able to catch the attention and imagination of audiences not only in the United States, but also the whole world. The film is based on a true story about the editor of the famous French Magazine Elle, Jean-Dominique Bauby, who suffers a stroke
and is left paralyzed in a French hospital. His only means of communication is to blink his left eye, the only part of his body that has been left not paralyzed. The movie is quite ingeniously done as most of the film is from the perspective of Jean-Dominique Bauby’s left eye. So in essence, we are seeing the world from his point of view. This style of directing really brought a sense of originality and perspective to this film and made it a much better film than it really should have been. If continuously reading subtitles does not turn you away, this is the film for you. In fact it may be perhaps one of the best French films ever made.
“Into the Wild” was primarily an unknown amongst all the big name studio films released in 2007, however the film was still about to shine just as bright. Emile Hirsch does an excellent job portraying the true story of an
Emory University student who gives up his life and possessions to go live in the peaceful serenity of nature. After burning his money and giving away his possessions, he sets off on his adventure north into the icy fortress of Alaska. There he fends for himself and truly lives in nature as an early human being was forced to do. In the tranquility and peaceful of the wild, he is truly able to become one with nature and all of its creatures. This movie is truly a great film and depicts a new and original idea in an accurate way.
Both of these movies are art in its truest form. Neither of these movies was a blockbuster nor really even a mid-budget movie but the director was still able to carve two cinematic masterpieces. This just goes to show that you don’t need a super budget or a roster of A-list actors to make a good film; it’s all about originality and
telling a relatable story. Make sure you watch both of these films when they come to your cable or satellite TV. If you need any more information about your channel schedule or your programming packing, make sure to contact your local TV provider.
