video editing software help?

i am thinking about saving my money for a new video editing software. i currently am using my iMac desktop computer and it has iMovie ’09 but i want to upgrade to something more professional.

I don’t know much about all the different kinds of software there are out there, but i have a friend who makes movies and he uses adobe after effects CS5.

i dont want to spend more than $ 500 but i want something that will give me more effects than what iMovie ’09 gives me.
I use a sony handycam. it is a 1080p HD camera and it would be nice to make HD videos
i would like to get the most “bang for my buck”
