What do movie/tv studios use to make it look like ur using magic?

Question by itsreighbitch: What do movie/tv studios use to make it look like ur using magic?
Like on Passions, when Tabitha or Kay “use their magic” little sparkles and beams of light come out of their hands and i was wonderin wat type of software these studios use to make that effect?

They could even use special effects that are built into the switcher board and do it in post-production.

Movies can add it easily in post production with an overlay of sorts
