The folks who put together the trailers are generally the same ones who are editing the movie. However, there is alot of input from the producers and marketing folks, because they want to make the trailer sell the movie. The editor sometimes works for the producer or the studio, some directors bring along their favorite. The trailers are edited whereever the movie is being made: big hollywood production company, movie studios, post-production houses, Robert Rodriguez has his at his house.
So pick your favorite movie, see who the editor is, and find out their credentials.
For instance, Jay Cassidy edited “Into the Wild”. Check him out in a video called “The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie Editing” (2004)

which is touted as a must see for anyone getting into the business.
