Most 3d modeling and animation studios have their own software, not stuff that is commercially available. I know that the 3d modeling program Maya has been used in industry a lot.
Weta Workshops (They did King Kong, Lord of the Rings, Avatar, Chronicles of Narnia etc) uses a software called MachStudio Pro, which is developed for them by a company called StudioGP. That is commercially available for $ 4000. That does the animation, and it may also have a modeler built in, or they might use another software such as Maya.
