Why not have the kids write the play themselves? The script may not be “professional”, but at least it will be from the heart. It will also mean that the play will be specifically tailored to the group performing it. There can be exactly as many roles as their are performers, and the 5-year-old can have just a few lines to memorize while the 17-year-old has a more difficult part.
