Well if you’ve got a Mac there’s iMovie which comes with every Mac. It’s pretty decent on the features and abilities for a free app.

Likewise if you’re willing to spend some coin there’s FinalCut Pro which is quickly becoming the Photoshop of the film industry. It’s a lot cheaper than the more enterprise level apps and it tends to be as powerful, if not more so, as well as a lot cheaper.

Otherwise, for PC a few of the bigger ones are Adobe Premier and After Effects. Neither free and they both have a hefty learning curve.
