Why does it seem like the black border in movies make a difference?
Question by Bob: Why does it seem like the black border in movies make a difference?
Nowadays you’ll notice a lot or all movies seem to have that black border on the top and bottom of the screen. Not sure if its just me, but whenever a movie gets the black border the quality seems much different than without it. Even normal tv shows on tv sometimes put the black border like when there is a special one hour episode or whatever. Does this have something to do with optical illusion? The black borders seem to make almost anything look like its a movie.

All the black border means is that the movie or show was not edited to fit every corner of your TV. If you watch a fullscreen show/movie, it doesn’t have the borders because they cut a little off of the sides to make it a square. If it has the borders, it means that it is widescreen (they didn’t cut the film). I do not believe that it affects the quality of the film. It may just be that TV shows are filmed with lesser quality than movies. (TV shows are usually fullscreen)
