Why don’t 3D movies in theaters up the brightness?
Question by : Why don’t 3D movies in theaters up the brightness?
Watching a movie in the cinema through 3D-glasses makes the picture noticeably darker and mutes the colors somewhat. I always wondered why they don’t compensate for this effect by boosting the brightness and contrast of the 3D-projector a bit so the picture looks just as vibrant as viewing a non-3D film.
Couldn’t really find an answer to this so that’s why I’m here! Any explanations?

I have been asking myself the same question, and because I have trouble seeing in low light, I often miss important moments on screen. I have even sat through half of a 3D movie with the glasses OFF because if this problem.
I read an article last week where Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg addressed this very issue, and made it clear that they would correct this problem. However, it is a bit challenging, they said, because it requires that theater owners invest in new bulbs and possible designate different screens to 3D only and 2D only, due to the range in formatting.
Basically, it’s going to happen but it’s going to take a little while. 3D doesn’t have quite enough of the box office pue to convince thrifty theater owners to make the switch……ye.
