Why won’t my Windows Mover Maker movie work?
Question by : Why won’t my Windows Mover Maker movie work?
My friends and I recently got together and messed around and made a short film, which I downloaded to my computer to edit. I converted the mpeg video into WMV to use as both audio and video. (I even redid the sound from AVI to WMV after the movie didn’t work the first time I tried publishing it.) The final video is around forty-five minutes in length, but at the same shot EVERY time I publish it, the video freezes (at 38 seconds in). Ten seconds later, the audio fails as well. If I click ahead in the movie, I’ll find some places where they both work again for a bit, but thirty seconds later, they fail again.
When I’m editing the clips in WMM, the movie will play through fine. I don’t have any problems getting the clip previews to play, either. While it’s publishing, I don’t get any errors or anything that indicates something has gone wrong. The only way I’ve tried publishing it so far is to my computer; as I haven’t had any luck there, I don’t want to try publishing it to a DVD and then have it not work.
So far I’ve tried disabling the video codec filter and redoing the audio but, other than that, I just don’t know what to try to make this video work. Various (probably unnecessary) details: I used FormatFactory to convert all files (from mpeg and AVI to WMV); I’m using WMM Version 6.0.6002.18005 (the version that came with Vista Home Premium).
Given all that, can anyone tell me either what I’m doing wrong or how to fix what the computer is doing wrong? I’ve read that WMM is unreliable when you start using it for longer movies. Would it work to break the movie up into several smaller sections? If so, how small would they have to be to publish correctly?
Lastly, if there is no real way to fix this and the problem arises because WMM just sucks, does anyone know of any free, reliable movie editing software available for download? (I’m a college student; I don’t have hundreds of dollars lying around to spend on something I do for fun.)
I appreciate ALL of your help! I’ve been working on this for a few days and it’s frustrating being so close and yet so far to having a working movie. 10 pts to the first answer that can solve my problem!
@Kris: Windows Movie Maker runs fine; I’ve looked at the update to 2.6 and it indicates that it should only be downloaded if WMM will not start or run with Vista.
@Caloline: I’ve got a program to create DVDs; it’s making the movie file itself that’s the issue. Can this program be used for editing video and audio as well as DVD burning?

I recommend updating to the latest WMM, Version 2.6:

Click Download and then click the first download link labeled “Official Site” – that links directly to Microsoft’s servers.
