the truth is, you never really know how good your script is until you get someone else’s opinion. after all, the script is meant to tell a story to an audience – your audience should decide if it’s good.
if you think it’s good – you should register it with the writer’s guild of america – (www.wga.org).
they will then vault your script – and if a film is ever made that’s similar to your script, you will be able to prove that your story was created before the film was made.
to find out if it’s good or not, is another question.
the best way is to get a professional reader to review it. you can hire a professional reader to review it and give you notes – but you’re basically paying for one guy’s opinion.
many great movies were passed over by reader in the past so they don’t know everything. if you’re interested in going this route – check the “Hollywood Reporter” or “Variety” ads in the back.
if you’ve taken screenwriting classes – i’d suggest you ask your teacher(s) to read you script.
if you know of other screenwriters – you might ask them to review it.
the true test is to send it to an agent and see if they will represent your script – they only do so on really good scripts. But don’t send them the script yet. Send them a “query” letter telling them a little about yourself and your script and why only you can tell this story. Ask them if they would be interested in reading your script. If they are, they’ll have you sign a release form and ask you submit the script. To get a list of credible literary agents, see the wga.
hope this helps.
