Gift Guide: Tech gifts for frequent travelers
Day 30 (October 10th): Someday I’ll Fly Away

I am guilty of collecting Lonely Planet travel guides for places all over the world that I want to visit someday. Almost every time I find myself in Chapters or Coles I end up walking out with a new one. On really dreary Vancouver days, I like to throw on a big comfy sweater and go outside with one of them and imagine what it would be like to be there instead. Sometimes I picture what living there would be like and who I’d meet and what I’d do.
The first one I ever got was for Ireland. This was a few years ago and was probably because I was working in an Irish bar. Since then I’ve been saying that I was going to go live there for a year. Guess that never worked out, but I have decided that I will definitely visit someday. I want to see Galway and Cork and Dublin and Waterford and Limerick. I’ve planned out touring the Guinness brewery and going to Blarney castle and catching the Kilkenny Arts Festival and eating proper bangers & mash. And now I have friends living over there!
I should probably spend less time daydreaming and more time actually doing what it takes to make it happen someday. But now other priorities have come up and I need to take care of those first before I can indulge in my future world-wide adventures.
Speaking of Ireland, everyone should go check out the Irish band The Frames. Glen Hansard, their frontman, appeared in the epic movie "The Commitments" many years ago and has since starred in the film "Once" which is fantastic and you should also go out and see as soon as possible (if it’s still playing in cinemas wherever you are). I saw The Frames this summer at Bumbershoot and they blew me away. The Irish were always known for being pretty passionate about their music, though.

NEW YORK—If you have people on your gift list who travel a lot, you may want to think about giving them something to keep them comfortable and entertained while on the go, even if they’re not as nomadic as George Clooney’s road warrior character in the movie “Up in the Air.”
