How do you get rid of the black space around pictures when making a slide show on Vegas Movie Studio?

Question by Nunya B: How do you get rid of the black space around pictures when making a slide show on Vegas Movie Studio?
I am trying to make a picture slide show on Vegas Movie Studio HD 9.0, but the pictures that I have are scanned (don’t know if that makes a difference) and when I place them in the video track there is a lot of black space around the pictures in the video preview. I tried moving around the aspect ratio in the event pan/crop window, but the circle that shows how much of the picture is shown does not fit the photo correctly, so if I want the full photo shown, the black space is there. Does anyone know what I’m talking about/can help me?

Hello;

I know exactly what you are talking about!

First, the problem is one of geometry the screen size for video is (generally) either a 3×4 or a16x9 ratio if your picture is square 1×1 it will never fit correctly. Chess players run into this problem when making chess videos.

There are actually two fixes, the worst one is to change the geometry of the picture — unfortunately this distorts the image and usually is not an acceptable solution. Most decent photo editing programs allow resizing or scaling. I would point out that 99% of all pictures do need a little cropping and should be judiciously edited — so it is worth a try.

The way I deal with the problem is to use the “black space”. I use MS powerpoint to create a slide of the picture. The picture is in a slide and the slide is a 3×4 ratio, there is still the wasted space but now you can use the space. perhaps you can add another picture or put text in the empty space on the side of the picture. MS Powerpoint allows you to create any background you want — so the presentation becomes more esthetically pleasing.

Best of luck,

Bill
