Question by raquaelh: is it illegal to use copyright music in a independent film if you don’t intend on distributing the movie?
i know it sounds weird, but if i wanted to make a movie for a small college film festival and not ever sell it or distribute it aftewards, is it still illegal not to get permission or pay the bands that produced the music.

Any publication, even in an educational setting, that goes beyond “Fair use and commentary” requires permission of the copyright owner.
