Okay, i am making a 3d animation movie on Autodesk Maya, 3ds max, and other softwares are involved. The movie is a fighting movie, similar to the fighting of dragonball z. But I want to have a heavy metal soundtrack, with bands from multiple record labels. How do i get the songs i want to use, do i have to call every record label and get permission for the songs and pay royalties right on the spot, or will they take it out from the earnings of the movie, please help, i really need to know this.

Music is an ‘intellectual property’ and is copyrighted. You need to get permission or pay a license fee from the music publisher before you can use it. If not, you will be sued.

BUT, since you are making a movie, by yourself, on your desktop, your chances of selling it is very, very slim indeed. It would have to be a work of genius and you would need to wow them at anime film festivals. I suggest using local talent or ‘public domain’ music until an established exhibitor takes an interest in your film. THEY will pay the licensing fees for the music you REALLY want before your film is shown commercially.

OR, go to the artists directly and ask permission.
