Q&A: Wondering what digital Video camera would be best?
Question by TwilightsGrasp: Wondering what digital Video camera would be best?
I really know nothing about Video cameras, but am familiar with a computer. I have to make a independent movie for School about 2 hours long and thought about using Windows Movie maker as a editing program and was wondering which Video camera would be best for this type of thing, one able to connect to the computer, something under 400$ . Any tips would also be great, Thanks!

Firstly I’d suggest checking what you’re being asked to do – 2 hours is a very long time!! Also, a full shopping list is going to depend on what sort of video you’re making. As an editor, WMM is fine for joining your video clips and making a few adjustments, but I think your requirements will be too much for it. I’d look at Vegas Movie Studio, Premiere Elements or Serif’s Movie Plus. Movie Plus isn’t as widely known as the other two but it’s very powerful and the documentation’s good. Avoid Pinnacle Studio – it can be much too unstable (IMHO, of course).
I’d suggest looking at MiniDV camcorders in your price range from Sony, Canon, JVC or Panasonic – try and get something with an external microphone socket and the option for manual control. You’ll also need a tripod (try and borrow one – good ones will blow your budget) at least one mic and some way of holding it. A pen and paper to keep records of what got recorded where and when plus any other notes is essential!
