Without going into the detail you seem to require: studios would have made money with movies in years gone by, because there would not have been the entertainment outlets we have today. Movies gave the public moments of magic and fantasy, which they could not get anywhere else in their ordinary lives at that time. It is not surprising that they flocked to the movies and the money poured in.
