Your description doesn’t give too much about the design, but I’ve made a few homemade movies myself, so I can give a few suggestions. :]
*Plan your shots- Your angles and shots are very important! It gives the biggest impression in a film. I think for a “homemade” look, mostly hand-held shots would be best, but you have to know when to use this technique and when not to. It’s all about balance… You want to get the style across to the audience but too much is overwhelming.
*Sound- Another important element. It defines how the audience is supposed to react to the movie. If you’re going for over-the-top cheesey, you want some extremely epic scores. If you want dry humor, you should go with a song that contrasts the feel of the film… Etc.
Hope that helps a bit… I don’t know how much else I can give without a little more plot info!
