Why are some movies live and others are animation? How do they make the decision?

Question by Ezra: Why are some movies live and others are animation? How do they make the decision?
Not that I’m a Twilight fan, but I can say this, that if the Twilight’s film adaptation was made into an animation, majority of the girls would go beyond ballistic. So why did they decide to make it a live film instead of animation (not just for twilight, but even HP, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, etc.)?
Has any animation movie ever won an oscar award? The film makers have to have a constructive reason to make a movie animated or live action (with some visual effect) – so what are the reasonings that they would have to choose live action over animation?
Do you agree that with animation, it draws more audience than live action? Or do some ppl like live action better b/c they like to see their favorite actors/actresses in action more than just their voice?

Note: I’m asking cuz, theres this novel that I’m writing that has some supernatural elements and I’m going to put a endnote saying how I would have imagined it, if it were to be made into a movie? And my answer would be for my particular story that I’m writing, I would strongly prefer to see it animated than live, b/c don’t you agree that there are some things that can be done in animation that can’t really be done in live action?

a lot of it has to do with the audience, older and more mature people tend to like real actors verses cartoon, it makes the movie more serious. kids tend to be more entertained by cartoons, which is why most children’s movies are cartoons
