Is “A Series of Unfortunate Events” only for children?

Question by TheProgrammer: Is “A Series of Unfortunate Events” only for children?
I watched some time ago the movie “Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events”: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0339291/ and now I watched it again. It seemed a wonderful movie and I liked it very much. I agree that it can be considered a movie for children, however it has many intelligent and subtle messages, as long as some darker scenes, that makes it very nice to watch for adults too.
So I wish to buy the books: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061119067/ref=s9_simp_gw_s0_p14_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0VGE9YN967PZ5FHCAH0Z&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846
However in the description it says that they’re for children and the ambition of the author was to write the “book he would have loved to read at 10 years”. Wanted to ask you if the books have the same intelligent style as the movie that would make it a pleasant read for adults too, or they’re really for 10 year olds.

I’ve only read the first one and while enjoyable it’s definitely a children’s book. It’s still a fun read though.
