Question by Jim Embry: What do you see happening in the consumer packaged goods sector, and why?
Technology seems to be making major strides in this sector. Tom Cruise did a movie called minority report where he was identified by implants, shopping suggestions where made to him as he walked through a shopping mall, is this going to be a good or a bad thing? It depends on your perspective, I guess.
As a consumer, with all of the choices, it’s a little nice to have the field narrowed. But it’s also a privacy violation and disruptive. You might be in for one thing and not want to be offered things that at other times might be ok but at the moment are not what you are after. That would be annoying.
I don’t like it. There is so much clutter that marketers are looking for anyway to stand out to their targeted customers. They make money by segmenting and serving that market. They reduce competition in that manner.
By targeting customers – they save money. Will they pass on the savings to their consumers? It’s unlikely, I think. A lot of advertising is wasted. It’s been a problem over decades.
