I went through the US Army’s basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC a few years back, and let me just say it was a big poltically correct joke. I’m just thankful I didn’t get sent to Iraq becuase it did not prepare me in the least for it. I went in thinking it would be super tough like in the movies. Boy, was I in for a suprise.
Drill sergeants barely yelled, they didn’t play the mind games I heard about, and even the training itself was ridiculously easy. I truly feel bad for the people who had to go to Iraq with only this. Summer camp I went to in 7th grade was tougher than this.
Bill Clinton turned the military into this PC joke. That’s to be expected from a very liberal commander-in-chief, but Bush deserves much of the blame as well for not fixing it, and taking that same military to war, hence making the problem worse as the military has now had to make basic even easier than before.
The purpose of basic/boot camp is to instill values and discipline into you quickly, so you can meet the standards at your unit.
Soft basic/boot camp has only led and will continue to lead to more wounded troops, more dead US troops, and more case of PTSD.
True the Marines still have tough boot camp but they are the smallest branch and can only do so much.
kamzi, genius boy, this is a discussion board. All I want is other people’s opinions on the subject.
zephergeist, MOS is irrelevant. In battle, the enemy does not care what your job is. They will try to kill you no matter what.
Look at the MOS’s of troops killed in Iraq and you’ll see that many of them were “non combatants.”
