Question by : Is making a movie that isn’t historically accurate a bad thing?
I am making an animation about Jack the ripper but I don’t really know exactly how London was during the time of his killing spree back in 1888. I know the way London sort of looked at that time and the way people dressed but not the lifestyle and how everyone lived over there because I’m just a dumb American xD. If this animation I make is not fully historically accurate, does that really matter? And does it take the seriousness away from the actual animated movie? I am really working hard on this animation but I hope it doesn’t really matter like it didn’t really matter for the film watchmen. What do you think? Should I continue making it even though I am oblivious to the fact of how people actually lived in London back then?

In my opinion, it is important to at least get key factors accurate with all embellishment being your artwork. I think there’s a responsibility to portray historical events in their accuracy, as much as that is possible. Fact ‘is’ stranger than fiction, after all.
There are people who will watch your animation, and that might be their first introduction to the true story of Jack the Ripper and his killing of those unfortunate women in London in that day. There will be those who care not to learn any more about what happened, but they will remember your film. So, in that respect, you do owe it to them to provide a certain ‘education’ into the true history.
I really don’t think it would be too hard for you to do some research to satisfy yourself. You could try wikipedia for a beginning. Then maybe ask your local librarian for a book on the subject. If you start with the basic ‘bones’ of the story, then you can build on that your own ‘skin’.
