Splitting movies into more than one section in Sony Vegas 6.0?

Question by Julia P: Splitting movies into more than one section in Sony Vegas 6.0?
Like most people I started off editing clips with WMM and I recently got Sony Vegas and experienced that shock of “oh my god what the hell is all this crap?!” But I’ve watched a bunch of tutorials on YouTube and have most of the basics down, but theres still one thing I can’t figure out.

You know with WMM when you import a movie it automatically splits it into clips that are just a few seconds long? Is there any way to do that with Vegas? I know how to use the “S” key to split it at a certain point, but when you’re working with an entire movie it can be kind of tedious to have to put the whole 2 hours onto the time line to get 3 seconds worth of footage. And it just makes the navigation of finding certain scenes easier.

So if anyone could tell me how to do that that would be great.

Hi,
if you capture your source video using the built-in tool from Vegas (file menu, capture video) it WILL detect individual shots based on DV input and break your movie into clips.

However, if your DV input (=the camera or other DV device) does not support this, or you are trying to edit some file and not captured video, you’ll end up with a huge monolitic file, that you have to cut manually. At least I couldn’t find a solution for that either…
