The best editing software…?

I’m using Windows Movie Maker to edit and add effects to my home movies. I’m trying to step my game up and I would like to make a short film for film festivals. I need to know what editing/movie software is decent enough for this application. Any further info would help as well…price, where I can get it, etc. I don’t need the best editing software ever, but I need a respected one. Thank you for any info.
