A Brief Guide to the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console
nintendo3dsblog.com The Nintendo 3DS’s Virtual Console service will allow you to purchase classic Game Boy and Game Boy Color games through a digital download service. Numerous bloggers (including myself) made the mistake of assuming there would be Game Boy Advance titles and, while that isn’t an impossibility for the future, it has not been announced. The original quote from Satoru Iwata at the event was “Similar to Wii, Nintendo 3DS will have a Virtual Console function to purchase classic software. We are planning to start by making software for Game Boy and Game Boy Color available.” All of the game will be available in 3D. This is a manual process as Nintendo has chosen to not simply apply a software filter on the game, which could produce undesirable results. Iwata explained this, saying that “to make the classic titles 3D will not be as easy as providing Virtual Console software, but we are eager to make them available for the download sales.” The first two games announced for the Virtual Console service are Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX. There are currently no price points for these titles or any indication of how well integrated the 3D effects will be.
