Am I a good writer? Do I have any talent?

Question by define_normal: Am I a good writer? Do I have any talent?
She had gray eyes and long, dark brown hair. Like I’d always wanted. Her posture was stooped as she leaned forward, focused on the well-worn paperback novel in her hand. I recognized the cover. One I had seen in long rows, lining selves like pickets in a fence. A flashy banner across one such shelf had announced “Celebrated, best-selling author Patricia Whitman’s compelling sophomore novel!” The New York times raved, “Fresh and Exciting! Surpasses expectations!” The Boston Globe gushed, “Whitman exceeds the high standards set by her debut!”
I had this rule. Never read a book, when the authors name is printed larger than the title. Usually, this works with the exception of classics. If I see Steinbeck or Dickens in 80 point font, I don’t care because I’m sure they’ve earned it. However, I’m always a bit dubious when it comes to the “must-reads” that people buy for five dollars at the airport and then throw away after the fight.
Just the other day, I picked up a book that friend of a friend had recommended. The cover was crisp with raised lettering and a clever layout. The words printed on each page in Times New Roman were sharp and clear. The beginning of each chapter was marked with a number in flowery script. Overall, the presentation was very…. marketable. Well, I suppose that might fool you for awhile before you examined the ideas behind the well-formed figures. Simple and amateurish with a forced melodramatic style. Like a Kincaid painting, I guess. Only I don’t look twice at his works. Lack of originality and an underlying spirit of commercialism seems to be a pervading force in the art scene today.

You have potential…but you have a lot of sentence fragments and such. You could be a great writer, but it needs to be cleaned up a bit, polished and such.
