I am a 3rd year majoring in architecture right now. I’ve come to realize that I don’t like it as much as I have been trying to convince myself I like it. In fact, I don’t think I have any real interest in it anymore. I liked it at one point, but over the past year I have gotten very frustrated in it and have lost most interest in it other than I like to look at cool buildings (which most people are fascinated by them). I’ve realized that architecture isn’t making me happy and I only like the very basics of house design, which to the extent I like it, I would probably never actually be able to do it, and I don’t truly love it. I chose architecture because it was the only thing I had really thought about and it seemed somewhat interesting, but after two years, I don’t think I could continue with it and truly be happy.
I absolutely love reading and watching movies, and I love to write. I want to change my major to English because I love immersing myself in a good book or show and I want to be a part of the process and help others be able to do the same by going into publishing, or perhaps something in the movie or television area with screenwriting, so English seems like a good way to go. Plus an English major can generally go to grad school for anything.
I guess I’m just wondering: am crazy to go from getting a BS in architecture to a BA in English? And how do I tell my parents I want to switch majors (they think I like architecture and don’t know I am even thinking about switching)?

You are not crazy just because your changing majors. But it happens to many people. If your not truly happy with what you wanted to be, then its okay to change it because you want to do something you love to do and are good at. I know it may be hard to tell your parents, but they will understand, they are your parents. Just tell them after two years in architecture, I wasn’t somewhat interested and I want to major in English since i love to read. Just keep going through with English, if you like it, then don’t let that opportunity get to waste and get to it! Just switch and see if you enjoy it! Its never to late to change!
