Question by D: Book or play to movie question?
What is it called when a director makes changes from the original it’s based about? Something liberties? Ex.) like making a movie out of a novel but COMPLETELY changing the story line.

Adaptation. It isn’t only the director. Most especially the screenwriter and producer are very much involved.
