Question by Surferdude: can you make famous books reference in movies without needing license?
i’m making a movie and i want to make a movie and in the movie a character is seen holding a known book and he is imagining a scene from it. can i shoot this scene without needing license for using the book? i’m making this movie for a contest, but the contest doesn’t have a prize in money, the prize is an i-pad(just to make clear the purpose of the movie)
sorry for the mistake from the begining of the question

That is an excellent question, you are smart to actually ask it instead of rushing into a movie that could get you sued. I’m not sure if you can get fined because of copyright reasons, but normally for any mention of a book in something you make (a movie, your own book, etc) in books it says you must get permission from the publisher. Almost always says this. I’d reccommend you send the publisher of the book a letter explaining your situation, kindly asking for permission, or, if they have one and it’s public, an e-mail. You should ecspecially send them a letter or e-mail asking for permission to use a scene or scenes (or even quotes) from the book, if there is a prize. Hope this helps! =) (E-mail me if you need help on the letter.)
