Question by Pika.: Did the movie making company have to ask permission to make Across the Universe?
I think it was Sony… did they have to ask Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney to make the movie, since they are the two surviving Beatles? Or was it originally Ringo’s and Paul’s idea?

Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono were both supportive of the movie and were in constant touch with the director Julie Taymor.
Ringo Starr wasn’t involved as he didn’t write any of the songs used – It was McCartney/Lennon. Paul was even at the premiere and said he loved the movie afterwards.
Even if McCartney and Ono didn’t approve of the movie, it probably still would have been made. Both Colombia Pictures and Revolution Studios are owned by Sony – Sony own the Sony/ATV music publishing company in a 50/50 partnership with Michael Jackson (now the Jackson Estate). The Sony/ATV company own the publishing rights to most of The Beatles songs.
