Good independent/different films?

My boyfriend likes different movies. Ones that make you think. Personally, I prefer romantic comedies. But I still watch all his movies. He likes movies like Being John Malcovich, Naked Lunch, Mirror Mask, Donnie Darko, Dark City, Existenz, Waking Life, The Science of Sleep, Inception, etc.
I didn’t really like Dark City, Existenz, The Science of Sleep, or Naked Lunch. I much prefer movies with happy or at least, not sad endings. I really liked mirror mask. We also watched Paprika together (he usually doesn’t like anime, but he liked that one because it was about dreams) which I also really liked. And I loved Inception.
His favorite movie is Pan’s Labyrinth, and his second favorite is Donnie Darko.
SO, I was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions for some good independent films (or movies similar to the ones above) that he and I would both like so we could watch them together.
