How much does the average movie editor make?
Question by Missy: How much does the average movie editor make?
I’m only a junior in high school, but I’m pretty sure I know what I want to be out of college. I want to be a writer and journalist, but most people say that I wouldn’t be making a steady income. So, I’m wondering about becoming a movie editor or trailer maker, too. Is it my misconception that people who make trailers earn a pretty good income? In ‘The Holiday’, the main character is pretty wealthy. She just happens to be a trailer maker. I know that’s a movie, but that’s why I’m asking. I already am considered very strong in editing. I edited over 100 videos. I have over 500 subscribers on YouTube. I always receive really great feedback. Some people have even cried when seeing my videos, because of the emotion they exhibit. Anyway, that’s all beside the point. I’m just wondering what the average annual income would be for movie/trailer editors. Also, where are these jobs usually found? Would I be able to live in New York or have to move to Los Angeles? Is there any available editing jobs in London? I would prefer to live in New York or London when I’m older… Thanks for any help! 🙂
P.S.- I still plan to pursue both writing and journalism. I don’t see why I can’t have my dream job.

Your salary will vary depending on the project your working on, for some non profit documentary they might have next to nothing to pay you but large studio projects will pay fat. Expect to charge anywhere from 10 or 15 to 50 an hour depending on the project. As for living anywhere it would be possible but you wont be able to find many jobs, really the way people get work in la is through friends its 99% hook ups through past work contacts so its good to live in ny or la where you will see people face to face and to be able to ask if anyone has work. Just remember editors work long hours and you will have to be a assistant editor first doing most of the technical work but everyone has to start somewhere.
