im a novice director/writer for commercials. and i am in a commercial making contest for a company. does anyone have any tips on how to make my commercial look proffessional

I would have expected you would have leaned that at film school.
If you can imagine all the problems a still photographer has when attempting to work professionally without at least a couple of years of photo education behind him, just multiply that image by about 20x to get an idea of the problems you will run into while attempting to produce a commercial.
