Recently on sites like mediafiremoviez and some torrent sites people are uploading small size (350-500MB) but great quality movies using the h264 format.

I tried to experiment on my movie collection to decrease the size of the video and keep the quality. I managed to shrink the movie to 700MB with decent quality with virtualdub but i don’t know how these rippers like ridderela mange to shrink the file even further with better quality.

I just want to know what application they use to encode movies and the settings they use.

a step by step guide would be great.

Do not know exactly what they’ve done, but my suggestion is 100% practicable at least work for me. Here it is:
1: Google WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe, download and install it.
2. add your source file and choose HD Video as main category TO MP4 as subcategory. Choose H.264 as output video codec.
That’s done.
But do you know why H.264?
H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 or AVC (Advanced Video Coding) is a standard for video compression. As its name indicates, H.264 surely is an advanced video format in variety ways comparing with MPEG-2. With half even quarter of Bit-rate usage, H.264 delivers both High-def quality and small file size.
