Is this a conceivable idea? Could I make a living just off of this?
Question by The Crypt Keeper: Is this a conceivable idea? Could I make a living just off of this?
Good evening.
I am a 20 year old college student who recently inherited $ 167’000 dollars from an uncle. That is enough money that I have quit my day job and can use that money for the rest of my time in college plus some time after if the job market still isn’t improved.
But I’m thinking, do I need college or a day job? Can I make a lot more money off this money?
This is what I’ve been thinking long and hard about, as well as looking at the rates.
What if I used some of this capital in for the film industry?
Low budget, straight to DVD slasher movies are cheap to make and has a huge market with young people. I could hire a professional camera crew, rent a location and just hire some unemployed college students in the drama department to do an acting gig for close to minimum wage. I have done the research, and it would only cost about $ 20k of capital, AND if I partner with a slaher movie company, such as Twisted Pictures, they will cover the cost of DVD production and we can easily get the film on Moviestop and blockbusters shelves due to the extreme popularity of these films among young people.
Then Twisted Pictures (If I use them) will cut me in for 25-35 % of proceeds, and using models from research, I could easily make 150-250K after taxes for one such film.
Now the main hurdle would be a lack of personal experience in script writing, although I could not only consult with someone on this, but how much creativity is needed?
The more I think about it, what’s wrong with the classic? Nothing. Drunk, horny college students on spring break, driving to their destination, They get lost, middle of nowhere, car breaks down, farm house. And take it from there. Add a few nude scenes, you’ve got a movie. That’s one of the many classic plots that noone has a trademark on. And again, it sells, it has a target market, young people. They go into moviestop, they go to blockbuster, they download online, they look at fearnet, and horror is the most poopular genre, and in the sub genre, slashers beat out ghosts, vampires and goblins easily.
I will be meeting with a few people in the industry about this and am rather excited (Who wouldnt be, work about two weeks, two or three times a year, and make hundreds of thousands of dollars.)
But just among the community here, does this sound like it could be a living?

Pay your college tuition for the next 4 years, buy a decent car and stick the rest of the money into a savings account so you can have an emergency fund.
What you are about to do…. is too risky and even for a low class movie.. you don’t have enough funds.
Which won’t stop the vultures from taking your money…. but you are guaranteed to run out halfway into your movie and as soon as your money dries up… they are gone.
