Mallu Movies

Have you seen any of the following?Garam masala, Kyon Ki, Billu, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Hera Pheri, Chup Chup Ke ..you d think why am i naming all these Bollywood movies ,well because thats exactly what they are not. They are all remakes of Malayalam hits.

Malayalam Movies are typically about social /familial issues, meaningful middle-class problems. The protagonist would be dressed shabbily and Mallu actresses are known to be beautiful if they don’t put make-up quite antagonistic to all other cinema. But that’s what this state is all about-Conserving everything.

Growing up we never let our parents watch any Malayalam movies the days popular Hindi movies were to be screened ,its only in the non-prime time that they could soothe their eyes by catching a Mammothy/Mohan Lal movie.I really wanted to name another actor but the fact is Malayalam

cinema is just about these two, basically they are like Amitabh Bachchan of Mallu cinema still romancing young girls and just not getting out of the way for youngsters to grab few of those awards.

After Mamooty and Mohanlal , Suresh Gopi and Jairam might be the only actors in mallu cinema rest are all sidekicks. With brilliant scripts written everyday, one of the latest movies-My Big Father is a light way of looking at the very delicate phenomenon where a dwarf has a normal 5’10 child. No other cinema experiments as much as Mallu movies do, they have a rich heritage and reputation to keep up after all.For a long time only Adoor Gopalakrishnan movies and other noted Mallu film-makers would get national awards. The directors who won the prestigious award include Adoor Gopalakrishnan (1973,1985,1988,1990,2007), G. Aravindan (1978,1979,1987), Shaji N. Karun (1989), T.V.

Chandran (1994), Jayaraj (1998) and Rajivnath (1999).

One such Gopalakrishnan movie is called Elippathayam (The Rat Trap) (1981) ,I dare any sane person to go watch it,”This film documents the feudal life in Kerala at its twilight. The protagonist is trapped within himself and is unable to comprehend the changes taking place around him.” But the problem is the movie makes it a bit too symbolic, the entire movie all he does is to catch rats, release them and then go catch again!!

But the blog is not about cinematic excellence that movies here attempt at, its the movie watching experience that I wish to share. In kerala normal movie tickets cost 30 bucks.50 is Balcony. In the most posh theater in Ernakulam of course its very different. Its 60!!! for normal and 70!! for Balcony.

But this is not what makes them different, the tickets start getting

booked just 15 minutes before the movie title appears and there’s a long queue at least one hour before the movie starts outside the theater all times of the day.If you have just stood in queue got a ticket, don’t be too happy its “on your mark” time. When the doors open everyone runs..RUN? yes to procure the best seats and save seats for partners in turn. No,tickets don’t bear numbers, its free seating.

If even this does not tickle your senses, sample this!! Even if you have a ticket in hand its not assured you will get a seat and watch the movie and no they don’t reimburse the money.

The best part about watching movies in Kerala are no guilt factor In 30 Rs go and enjoy a nice movie. In fact one of the best places to catch a movie of course is MG road where more than 10 theaters are lined up on the same street. The people of Kerala like it this way and if

you ask a Moviegoer here he d say” Laletande picture kaanan endhum”-translated as Anything for a LAL movie….

I am a student at Ramjas College in my final year of graduation.I am known to be an introvert and writing gives vent to my opinions/views and makes me feel liberated. In the process if someone derives pleasure, help or entertainment I consider it a boon in disguise to be instrumental in making someone happy while in pursuit of happiness myself.
