As I mentioned in my article last week, the majority of performances presented at the Wiener Festwochen this year belonged to what German theatre scholar and critic, Hans-Thies Lehmann, has called ‘Postdramatic theatre’, meaning a theatre that parts company with the basics of drama, traditional or otherwise, to assert its identity as live performance rather than ‘re-produced’ text.
